Our Respect and Support Runs Deep.
It’s a complicated world we live in today, but one thing is clear: We need to be kind to the Earth, and that means supporting her in ways that will ensure her life-sustaining qualities are cared for and nurtured consistently and responsibly.
Our environmental and sustainable practices begin in our fields. Take, for example, our blueberries. We apply sawdust at the base of the plants to both increase absorption of water and minimize evaporation of water, as well as to build a rich soil for the plants to not only grow but to thrive. Between the rows, we plant grass to control weeds and to minimize habitats for pests. Not only does this help keep the fruit clean during harvest, but it also helps prevent runoff during rainy season.
While the berries are ripening and during harvest, we use trained falcons to discourage the birds. This creates a natural barrier, as opposed to an artificial system of sound cannons and nets. In addition, weeding and pruning is done by hand.
When the berries arrive in our plant for processing, we take close care to ensure that our fruit is cleaned and packaged in a safe, responsible manner. We manage our waste stream and recycle all of our berry crates and packaging materials. Water is always recycled and reused.
We’re also extremely dedicated to saving energy. Motion-sensor lighting resides throughout our plant along with high-speed doors with thick insulation to protect against energy loss in our fruit freezers. That’s certainly not all we do, but we hope this gives you a good idea about some of the most important things we’re doing to do our part every day.
